2020: Tree Lightings in Boston | By Rachel Bakish

Want to know where to see the most spectacular Christmas lights in Boston? Typically, the kick-off to these festive ceremonies feature entertainment, but due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the tree lighting ceremonies this year will be virtual. These dates instead mark the start of nightly illumination throughout the city.

Boston Holiday Lights Schedule:

Thursday, December 3rd | Boston Common Tree Lighting
Thursday, December 3rd | Boston’s Public Garden / Commonwealth Mall Avenue Lighting
Friday, December 4th  | Light up Seaport

Boston Common Tree Lighting
Thursday, December 3rd

Since 1941, this annual tree lighting has turned Boston Common into a winter wonderland. Lights adorn the trees around the park leading up to the commemorative spruce that comes to Boston every December. This iconic tree memorializes a 100-year bond formed between the citizens of Boston and Halifax, Nova Scotia after the Great Halifax Explosion of 1917.

Boston’s Public Garden / Commonwealth Mall Avenue Lighting
Thursday, December 3rd

Trees along the Mall will be lit after a festive gathering with friends, and neighbors. Trees will be illuminated with elegant lights made possible thanks to community support and private donations raised by the Committee to Light Commonwealth Avenue Mall

Light Up Seaport
Friday, December 4th

Celebrate the most magical season of the year in Boston’s sparking, innovative neighborhood, the Seaport District. Enjoy modern art installations, breathtaking ocean views and the fourth annual tree lighting, Light Up Seaport, all in one place!
