In the depths of Covid in June of 2020, we purchased 265 Dean Road in Brookline. Despite having finishes, fixtures and “updates” that were somewhere between 30 and 105 years old, we had a vision for what it could become with a little imagination and a lot of work. Although, my wife Katie deserves credit for much of the vision that brought the home to life (and certainly the finish selections we embraced).
At the heart of our vision, we wanted to establish an open-concept floor plan, something that would feel both inviting and functional. Perfect to enjoy both everyday as a family and for the times when we would entertain others. To achieve this openness, a second staircase and massive chimney were removed, among other things, opening up site lines and passages from room to room. Narrow doorways on the living level were replaced with wide openings to move freely around the main level.
And then, there was the basement.
When we bought the house, it was literally just dirt. But we had a dream for that space too— a place where our kids could run around, shoot hoops, and just be kids, no matter the weather. Dozens (if not hundreds) of fieldstones and copious amounts of earth were hauled out from the ground to create a full, finished lower level and give us more room for a new basement that would be fully playable! It wasn’t easy, but we knew it would be worth it.
Throughout the home, every detail was considered. Custom cabinetry. Hand-selected stone. Nearly 6,000 square feet of wiring, lighting, and layout decisions. This was anything but your rudimentary renovation!
After nearly a year, we moved into our dream home with Winn, James and Ellie. The living level filled with friends and family. The basement sport court became the heartbeat of so many memories. Birthday parties, snow day tournaments, and countless after-dinner games.
It’s been a remarkable place to grow these last five years and we know the next owner will have at least as much fun as we did living here.
So, if you know someone who appreciates a great house with history and charm while also embracing modern conveniences and upgrades, 265 Dean is very worthy of their attention and consideration. Get in touch now to set up a time to see the finished product for yourself.
